History of Honduras
In 1502, Christopher Columbus (and Italian navigator) arrived in Cabo de Honduras (Cape Honduras) and claimed the land for Spain. Soon, more spaniards visited and settled in there. Over time, after more Spaniards had come over from Spain, Spaniards gradually defeated the indians. Many indians were killed by Spaniards and by disease. Those who were not killed became slaves on Caribbean plantations. The Spaniards, meanwhile, made gold and silver mines in Honduras. The country developed quickly, and later in time, the country got it's first president, José Dionisio, who served from 1824 to 1827. The country became independent, in 1838. Tegucigalpa became the country's capital in 1880. The current president of Honduras is Porfirio Pepe Lobo, who was elected on January 27th, 2010.
